For the fourth mini interview with the COPIC AWARD 2021 judges, we asked Mr. Kei Matsushita to join us.
This is the third year that Mr. Matsushita has been a member of our judging panel.
We spoke with Mr. Matsushita, who has been watching over the growth of the COPIC AWARD in 2019 and 2020.

1985 and then, in 1987, completed his postgraduate studies. Matsushita was also awarded with various prizes, including the JAGDA New Designer Award, the TOKYO ADC Awards, the Education Minister’s Award and the Good Design Award.

- Were there any of the COPIC AWARD 2020 winning works that caught your attention?

I think the answer to this question is reflected in my choice for the Judges' Award. (Mr. Matsushita served as a judge for 2020 AWARD as well. See the archive of COPIC AWARD 2020 from HERE). click

His comment received during the judging process:

This entry uses COVID-19 as its theme, so when you look back on this year, you'll remember that it was the year of the pandemic. So I thought it was a symbolic piece. Also, while a lot of the entries use a linguistic, or as I would say a bit of a 'wordy' approach, I felt this piece is more poetic. I personally found this emotional approach to be worthy of recognition.

- What do you always focus on when you see the artworks? What do you expect to see in this year's AWARD?

I hope to encounter works of art that surprise me and bring me discoveries.

- lease tell us what to look forward to as a judge for the COPIC AWARD 2021. Also, do you have any message for those who are thinking of applying for this year's AWARD?

I want to re-recognize that drawing by hand has far more possibilities than drawing by computer.
Some things can only be conveyed by drawing by hand. I would like you to create the works just for yourself, without fear of failure.

- Do you have any memories or episodes related to Copic?

I used Copic markers when I was in an art university. I remember I thought I had to feel the same level of subtle color difference as Copic.
