 2021.04.24

For the final episode of the mini interview with the judges of the COPIC AWARD 2021, we spoke with curator Ms. Tomoko Yabumae.
She has been deeply exposed to many kinds of art and has seen many works created with various art mediums. What type of artwork will resonate in her heart?

Yabumae has curated a number of innovative exhibitions. Most recently, she was in charge of the overall planning and organization of the exhibition Eiko Ishioka: Blood, Sweat, and Tears—A Life of Design held at the Museum of Contemporary Art Tokyo. Her writings on modern and contemporary Japanese art have appeared in many art magazines and websites in Japan.

- Were there any of the COPIC AWARD 2020 winning works that caught your attention?

I was very interested in the work "Osaka metro" by Mr. Siarhei Sakuma. With a quick touch, he captured a moment in a crowded place and a strong impression of a woman. And the composition focusing on her eyes and red lips in a subdued color tone was also excellent.

- What do you always focus on when you see the artworks? What do you expect to see in this year's AWARD?

I want to focus on how the characteristics of Copic as an art medium are utilized in the art expression. Also, I'd like to see how the entries grasp the friction with the world.
I look forward to seeing works that depict an artist's unique viewpoint and sensibility while maintaining a universality that many audiences can feel on their own.

- Please tell us what to look forward to as a judge for the COPIC AWARD 2021. Also, do you have any message for those who are thinking of applying for this year's AWARD?

I believe that the COPIC AWARD is an opportunity for people from all over the world to showcase their very different universes while sharing the feeling of their fingers as they run pen on paper. I would like to see with my own eyes how imagination changes or resists reality under the COVID-19 crisis.

How was the mini-interview series with the 2021 AWARD judges?
We would like to thank all the judges for their cooperation. Thank you very much!

The COPIC AWARD is a rare opportunity to have your work seen by professional creators, but we hope you will enjoy creating your work without feeling overwhelmed.
We look forward to seeing your entry, which conveys what you like and your personality.
